The end of Chiff

When we started Chiff in 2018, our ambitions were high. Thanks to obtaining EU subsidies and winning LEF, we had the opportunity to try many different things: Chiff for individual use, the Teams version for SMEs, and many other things.

Despite all these efforts, Chiff has never been profitable. This has never been a major problem because we could manage to keep costs low and I've always enjoyed developing Chiff and creating something that people enjoy using (I hope) and that makes them more secure.

However, keeping software working and secure takes time and focus, and my focus has shifted to other projects. This gives me the feeling I can't give Chiff the attention it deserves. Therefore, after much consideration, I have decided to discontinue the development of Chiff. I know many of you use Chiff on daily basis, so this decision may come as an unpleasant surprise. I sincerely hope for your understanding of this difficult decision.

Timeline

The timeline for the deprecation will be as follows:

  • Chiff will continue to work as you're used to until February 1, 2026. Make sure you have migrated your accounts before that date.
  • After February 1, 2026, logging in via the browser and on your phone will be disabled. It will still be possible to view your passwords and export your accounts.
  • After April 1, 2026, the app and browser extension will be removed from the various app stores and the server will be shut down. After this date, it will be not be possible anymore to export your accounts.

I trust this provides more than sufficient time for everyone to migrate their accounts out of Chiff.

Migration

It's recommended to migrate your accounts to another password manager. I recommend Bitwarden. Bitwarden is open source like Chiff and has a free version for personal use. Although logging in works slightly differently than with Chiff (you need to create a master password yourself), Bitwarden offers virtually all the functionalities that Chiff also provides. There are also other alternatives, such as 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane and Keepass.

You can only use this method if you have an iPhone with iOS >26.0 and want to migrate to Bitwarden or Apple's Passwords app.

This is the easiest and safest method to migrate your accounts. You should be able to migrate all your accounts in just a few minutes. Additionally, this method also migrates your Passkeys.

Check FAQ #20 for a guide on how to migrate your accounts using this method.

Method 2: CSV export

Passkeys and SSH keys cannot be exported when you export via CSV. Make sure to add a new passkey / SSH key to all these services before deleting your data from Chiff.

If you can't use method 1, you can export your accounts to a CSV file and import that file into your new password manager.

You can read how to do this in FAQ #18.

⚠️ WARNING: make sure to delete the CSV file after importing! It contains your unencrypted passwords

Thanks

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has used, trusted and contributed to Chiff over the years. It has been an incredible journey, and although this was perhaps not the outcome we would have hoped for, I wouldn't have missed for the world. It has been great fun and I learned more than any university could teach. Chiff B.V. (as a company) will continue to exist as Nemis Security, focusing on cybersecurity related services.
